Congratulations to the Salem Blue Devils golf team for winning their first Class L championship this past week.

Not only did they take the title, they won handily, by 15 strokes, in a sport that is most often decided by the smallest of margins.

Golf, like all sports, is a game of psychological as well as physical challenges. But in golf, more than most, it’s an individual challenge that must be met, which makes it an even more phenomenal accomplishment that six members of the team shot under an 80.

A team made up of individuals doing their very best is the definition of a champion, and the Blue Devils showed the right stuff on the course this year.

Special thanks goes to Marilyn Campbell, who, with her husband, the late Bernard W.M. Campbell, began the Blue Devils team and supported them ever since. Campbell owns Campbell’s Scottish Highlands golf course and offered the use of the course to the team when the original venue for the tournament fell through.
