Keith Spiro
Manchester photographer puts focus on grayscale
Manchester resident and photographer Keith Spiro developed a love for photography at an early age. He grew up in a two-family home with a cousin upstairs who had a darkroom. When his cousin married and moved out, he claimed the darkroom for himself. Spiro is a self-taught photographer who most enjoys photographing people, but at his currrent show at The Wine Studio, you can see his unique take on common things. At a glance, the photos in “Not Quite Black and White” appear to be grayscale, but when you take a closer look, there is a hint of red here and a touch of light brown somewhere else. “Part of the fun of what I do is taking pictures of everyday objects,” Spiro said. Spiro’s work can regularly be found at Art 3 Gallery, 44 W. Brook St., Manchester. “Not Quite Black and White” is on display through September at The Wine Studio, located on Hooksett Road, Manchester. – Sarah Lebrun,
staff writer How did you get your latest photography to appear to be in black and white?
My work is all manipulation of light. I don’t edit, crop or use Photoshop. It’s kind of an optical illusion. In this show (at The Wine Studio), my work is all focused on gray scale.
Do you develop your own photos?
I do most developing myself. Almost everything here, with the exception of two pieces, I did.
How many shows have you displayed your work in?
I’ve been in a lot of shows. The farthest one away was in Tokyo. In Boston, I did a show through the Panopticon Gallery one of the 12 oldest galleries in the country and fully dedicated to photography.
Have you won any awards?
I’ve won many awards. I’ve won first place at the Manchester Artists Association’s Art in the Park, and regulary won Artist of the Month awards through the Manchester Artists Association. Two of the pieces I’ve won awards for are on display (at The Wine Studio) “Winterwonderland” and “Susquehanna Dawn.”
What do you enjoy photographing?
I enjoy taking pictures of people. You can tell the whole story with their face. Capturing stories is what I like to do. Anytime you meet a person, you see a whole new world.
