Q&A with Josh Logan:
Manchester musician vies for gig on national TV
By Heather Matthews
Josh Logan is a pretty big name in the Manchester music scene, but the Queen City native is about to make an even bigger name for himself on national television. Chosen to be one of 15 contestants on CBS’ newest reality TV show, “Rock Star: Supernova,” Logan will compete for the chance to record an original album with the supergroup featuring Tommy Lee of Motley Crue, Jason Newsted of Metallica and Gilby Clarke of Guns ’n Roses. “I want to bring an honor to Manchester,” Logan said. “Wouldn’t it be great if someone from this small city, this very small state wins this thing?” “Rock Star: Supernova,” which premiered Wednesday, airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. and Wednesdays at 8 p.m. on CBS. For more information, visit www.cbs.com/primetime/rock_star2. How did you get involved in the show? I originally tried out in Cambridge, Mass., at an open call. Then I was asked back to perform for the band and CBS. Now I am one of the lucky ones out of 25,000. It’s like a dream. Did you think you would end up here? Not initially, but now I know what I am capable of, and I have this in the bag. It took a lot of hard work and confidence. Now I am out here, and I am going to represent Manchester in a positive light. How long have you been out there? Well, we just came out to the mansion the other day. I’m in this beautiful $20 million mansion, and we are free to run around like crazy monkeys. It’s great. I lived in Cali for two weeks when I was auditioning in front of the band and for CBS. Then I went home, but I was called and asked to come back. What did you do when you got the call? I jumped around like a crazy lunatic for a while. My family was blown away. Everyone kept calling me and sharing in the excitement. What’s it like living in the mansion with people you’ve never met? It’s been a lot easier than I thought it would be. I thought there was going to be a lot of inflated egos, but everyone here is great. Have you thought about the future? Do you have any plans for after the show? I don’t have any right now. If I don’t win, I’m obviously going to continue what I am doing in Manchester. I work as a full-time musician in Manchester, I play four hours a night, five days a week as a solo act. Have you always wanted to be a performer? Absolutely. Performing is like a drug; I just need it. I’ve been performing since I was just 14 years old. My mom used to be a karaoke DJ, and she would get me in to perform, even at bars that I was much too young to get into. How has it been working with Tommy Lee and the rest of the band so far? This has already given me the opportunity to learn so much about the industry. I’m pretty green, but I’m already learning a lot. It’s awesome. I can’t wait to win this thing. Is it intimidating being watched by all those big cameras? It’s unbelievable. I’m not a shy guy, but I’m usually pretty calm and relaxed, and they’re trying to catch that flash behind my personality. It’s been interesting. I know that television shows don’t always reflect what a person is really like, so I am going to try my best to make sure I look like the intelligent person and cool musician I am. How does the show work? Each week we perform and someone gets eliminated. The public votes for the ones that do the best, and they go on to the next week. America’s votes count. That’s why I need everybody in Manchester, everybody who is reading this to vote for me. Everyone has been so supportive already, so I’m not even worried. I’m ready to get involved, and I’m ready to play this game.
