Third try the charm?
Once again, Candia and Auburn are considering getting together to educate their children. In the past 10 or 12 years, we’ve seen this effort happen twice, and it has yet to work out. Candia, Auburn and Hooksett must have seen the value of working together long enough to agree to form SAU 15, though even that partnership is on the rocks. Nevertheless, we encourage the two school boards to keep at it. It makes sense for Candia and Auburn, two similarly-sized communities, to reach for an economy of scale and share a middle school. Small elementary schools close to home make the most sense for little kids, but a larger middle school offers older children more activities and allows the two communities to pool resources. Both towns are struggling with overcrowded schools, and neither will escape the influx of new residents coming our way thanks to the expansion of the I-93 corridor. A solution must be reached soon. As these two towns work toward this solution, they will be dependent on approval from the public. So when the time comes, get involved enough to let them know what you want in your schools. – Editorials published by Neighborhood News Inc. are written by an editorial board.
Letters Public has right to know where tax dollars are going
To the Editor: This town council fiasco on Cabela’s gives new meaning to the old cliche, “Where there’s smoke, there’s usually fire.” Once again, Pat Rueppel’s council job is to represent her district. That means in the best interest. If she feels the best interest is to dig into Cabela’s business, then that’s what she has to do. Why are some councilors trying to shut her up? As to nonpublic meetings, our tax dollars are at risk here. Everything regarding Cabela’s must be made public with no more double-secret negotiations. What the (heck) is this, the U.S. government? While there are those who would have us believe everyone loves the Cabela’s deal, keep in mind it passed by only the narrowest of margins. Many taxpayers voted against it, and they absolutely have the right to know anything and everything about where their tax dollars are going, i.e., is $18 million being invested wisely or disappearing into a sinkhole? Since when did town hall become the “First National Bank of Hooksett” anyway? By the way, although I’ve lost no sleep over it, Cabela’s still refuses to answer my very simple question (from May 2006) about their hiring practices. I wonder why? Ed Groves Sr. Thanks for helping Hooksett Tornadoes raise $2,500
To the Editor: Dear Mr. Cochrane and Mr Robinson, On behalf of the entire Hooksett Tornados boys’ U-13 travel soccer team, and the coaching staff, it was my pleasure to report that through the efforts of many people in your community, we have raised a total of nearly $2,500 in donations and gift cards, to be divided evenly between your organizations. My fellow coaches Jeff Schimmel, Jason Franklin, our team and their families have worked hard over the past two months, soliciting donations for your organizations, in order to help those in need. A big thank you to all residents of Hooksett and the surrounding communities who donated to this cause by purchasing a raffle ticket. Stephen Singer of Merchants Automotive Group provided the catalyst for our effort, by donating to our team an autographed David Ortiz Red Sox jersey to raffle, so that our team could earn enough money for warm-up suits. At the onset, we decided as a team to do more with this opportunity, and decided to raise funds, and awareness, for these two great charities that help those in need. Merchants Automotive staff, especially Lauri Proulx, also helped us along with contacts of others who could help with our effort, and I have to mention that Cathy Malone from Hannaford’s supermarket was instrumental in helping raise funds with a used book sale at the Hooksett store. I would also like to mention other organizations that helped us along the way including the Hooksett Hurricanes Football president Sal Cristofaro and the entire Hurricanes organization for allowing us to sell tickets at their jamboree, Wal-Mart store manager Joe DeVuono of Hooksett for allowing us to sell tickets in front of their store, Sousa Signs for donating a great banner for us, Lafayette Press for donating the printed raffle tickets, the Cawley Middle School Builders Club for selling raffle tickets, Dianne at the Hooksett Food Pantry for selling tickets at bingo, Jen Ramsell from the Bedford Group for helping us with a press release, and Target for donating two gift cards. Hopefully, through the efforts of all these people, we were able to raise awareness of hunger and homelessness within our communities. In closing we would like to take the opportunity to thank you and your organizations for helping those in our community whom you reach out to on a daily basis. John W. Lyscars Keep a wary eye on whom?
To the Editor: The anti-free speech and anti-free press person, on and the same, from Candia, has just confessed his beliefs to all Hooksett Banner readers as being an anti-American. No wonder he has a nonpublished phone number and a hidden resident and mailing address. This way he doesn’t have to answer any questions. He challenged me about my article titled “The big bang almighty God,” and has failed to accept the invitation, which I extended Mr. Beward, to resume his moronish thinking and ideas. Jim Breagy Thanks to supporters in Epsom, Allenstown and Pittsfield
To the Editor: I wish to express my deepest gratitude to all the voters of Allenstown, Epsom and Pittsfield who cast their ballots for me during the primary election on Sept. 12. I have served the district as a state representative for nearly eight years to the best ability and without doing violence to my conscience. I am flattered and humbled by the support of the voters of these three communities in giving me the honor of having the Republican nomination for the November election. The November election is shaping up to be a hotly contested one. I would like to thank all of my supporters and urge the voters of Allenstown, Epsom and Pittsfield to continue their support and return me to Concord to serve another term as their representative. I stand by my promise that if I am returned to Concord, I will remain as responsive as I have been to my constituents and continue to work to maintain low taxes, greater local control and judicial accountability. Again, I wish to thank all my supporters and voters in these great communities. Tony F. Soltani Elect representatives to govern in the best interest of residents
To the Editor: I could not agree more with Mr. Kobel that all of us need to get out and vote on Nov. 7. However, I do not agree that blind support for partisan candidates is any kind of solution to the biggest problem facing New Hampshire. The Republicans have had more than 10 years to solve the education funding crisis and they have failed to do so. The difference this year is that the Supreme Court has set a deadline to define “adequate education” and the real cost to provide one to all New Hampshire children. Failure this time is very likely to mean that the legislature will forfeit it’s opportunity to craft a solution and the Supreme Court will instead establish one. I’d suggest the time has come for us to take a new approach to deciding which state Representatives and state Senators we send to Concord. Now is the time to consider which candidates, Republicans or Democrats, are the most likely to serve us by solving problems. These candidates will undoubtedly need the ability to work with representatives on both sides of the aisle, just as Gov. John Lynch has done for the past two years. Nov. 7 is a day to set aside partisanship and vote for the best possible candidates, regardless of party. Let us send representatives to Concord that want to govern in the best interest of all New Hampshire’s citizens. Bobby Nord Little things people do with your trash make a big difference
To the Editor: I have proudly been a resident of Hooksett for the past seven years. During this time, I have felt extremely guilty and embarrassed by a secret. This secret was that I didn’t recycle. Being a spiritual person, I imagined and joked that if I were to die, I would end up in recycling hell with a long conveyer belt organizing bottles, and I certainly didn’t want this to happen. This may sound ridiculous, but it just seemed so intimidating and overwhelming to start. Please, I didn’t even know where the transfer station was located. And really, I was happy we even got our trash out in time. But there was this concern I couldn’t get over. Being a mother, the knowledge that I could make a difference and help save my world was something I just couldn’t get out of my mind. It took me awhile, but I confessed it to my very Earth-conscious neighbor, Marion, and she gladly drove me down to the transfer station to show me the whole process. We pulled up to the office, and off to the distance I saw a woman standing in front of the recycle bin doors. She was busy organizing recyclables, yet when she saw us pull up her faced brightened and she ran over to greet us. She was so happy and full of smiles. This great lady is Diane Boyce and she is the superintendent. Honestly, I couldn’t believe this sweet angelic lady could be the head of the trash transfer station. I guess I expected someone gruff and creepy. She was extremely encouraging and the place was very easy to get around. It is really user friendly! Everyone is friendly! Signs label everything and there is lots of room. I can do this, I thought. So the next week I returned with my milk jugs, Sunday newspapers, cereal boxes and plastic juice bottles. I am proud to be a Hooksett resident and to have my transfer station sticker on my car. Hurray I recycle! And believe me, if I can do you it, you can do it, too! Susanna Hargreaves Vote for Beauchesne, Brown, Porter, Yeaton in November
To the Editor: The voters of Allenstown, Epsom and Pittsfield have an opportunity to elect four local people who will definitely represent our needs in the New Hampshire House of Representatives. Sue Beauschene, Carole Brown, Margaret Porter and Charlie Yeaton hold dear our values of fairness, speaking the truth, honesty and representing the needs of local people. Sue, Carol and Charlie are New Hampshire natives having been born and raised in Allenstown, Northwood and Epsom respectfully. Margaret has lived in Epsom for many years, is active in local activities and is respected by all. These people are independent thinkers who know how to get things done across party lines. They are only beholden to us the voters and not to lobbyists and party politics. Let’s send a really great team to Concord vote for Sue, Carol, Margaret and Charlie. They will speak truth to power on our behalf. Harvey F. Harkness Epsom PTO yard sale was a huge success
To the Editor: For what started out as an overcast day on Sept. 16, in Epsom, it sure warmed up to be a very gorgeous and profitable experience. This fundraiser started initially as a way for the PTO to get the community together in recognition of Sept. 11, 2001, and double it for a day of deals. Our third year has proved without a doubt that this idea has blossomed into a definite yearly event. There were over 20 tables reserved for this event, which amounted to many, many bargains and a steady stream of people all the way through 1 p.m. We wish to thank the many donations for the PTO table and the many volunteers that made it possible, but most especially a thank you to our chairman, Val Butterfield. who largely made it the success it was. Thanks again! Judy Small |
