AUBURN
Bomb squad called in for dynamite in car
By Nathan Duke
Staff Writer
A routine traffic stop led to
the confiscation of five pounds
of dynamite and a visit by the
state police bomb squad.
Auburn Police Lt. David
Flight was called on Sunday,
June 5, to investigate a disturbance
at the intersection of
Bunker Hill and Chester Road.
Two teens from Haverhill,
Mass. – Mark Stewart, 17, and
Ryan Stewart, 19 – were arguing
at the side of the road, with
one trying to convince the other
to get back into the car. The
brothers were accompanied by
another 16-year-old boy.
While speaking to them,
Flight noticed a military ammunition
box on the floor of the
car under the back seat and
asked about its contents. The
teenagers opened the box to
reveal five one-pound sticks of
commercial grade dynamite.
The teenagers were taken into custody by Flight and Chief
Edward Picard, and the New
Hampshire State Police Explosives
Disposal Unit was contacted
to remove the explosives,
which police say were “very
unstable,” due to their age.
The Stewart brothers were
charged with possession of
explosives, a class B felony.
Two houses on Chester Road
were evacuated and the road was
shut down for about an hour.
Auburn police were assisted
by New Hampshire State Police
Troop A and the Candia police,
as well as the state bomb squad.
The incident is currently under
investigation.
