PEMBROKE
SB2 voting fails again
By Jodi Wolfe
Staff Writer
Pembroke voters shot down
adopting official ballot law,
commonly known as SB2, with
a vote of 246-108 on the school
ballot, and 258-108 on the town
ballot.
These were petitioned articles
signed by 32 voters. A public
hearing on this warrant article
was held on Feb. 8, but fewer
than a dozen people attended
the meeting. A warrant article
asking residents to adopt SB2
was voted down last year as
well.
“I was hoping we’d win but it
didn’t happen,” said Glorie
LaFond, who signed the petition.
“I just feel everyone
should be able to vote, but
apparently some people don’t
feel that way.”
Voters who can’t attend Town
Meeting or School District
Meeting don’t have the opportunity
to vote, she said.
Selectmen’s race
Despite an opposing write-in
campaign, Cindy Lewis, a planning
board member, won the
one-year seat on the board of
selectmen by 265 votes.
Lewis, who has lived in
Pembroke all her life, has
served on the planning board
since 1985.
She was not available for
comment.
After hearing there was not
going to be a contested race for
the one-year selectmen’s seat,
Kline, a planning board alternate,
organized a write-in campaign
against Lewis. Kline lost
with 95 write-in votes.
“So, for a write-in with a
three-week campaign, that’s not
bad,” said Kline. “Generally
speaking, I’m happy with the
turnout although I’m disappointed.”
Other officer elections
James F. Goff, who has been
town clerk for over 20 years,
was re-elected as town clerk for
another year.
John B. Goff, was re-elected
treasurer.
Brian B. Tufts and Larry J.
Preston were re-elected for
three-year terms on the board of
selectmen.
Paulette Malo was elected
sewer commissioner for a threeyear

which all passed.
