Local skater medals

PLYMOUTH, Mass. –Fielding four lines at the synchronized skating season’s opening competition in Plymouth, Mass., recently, the Colonials took home four medals. The Junior and Intermediate lines each won gold medals, and the Novice and Juvenile lines each won bronze medals for the Colonial Figure Skating Club in West Acton, Mass.

The Junior line, including Breanne Moynihan of Hooksett, impressed the judges with a lively program, shifting fluidly from sustained flowing movements to aggressive execution of twizzles, choctaws and rockers. The skaters deftly matched the drastically changing music of Catch Twenty-Two: Riding the Fourth Wave throughout the routine, and finished with an intricate and edgy block, featuring a triple and double twizzle combination. Synchronized skating is the fastest-growing division of U.S. Figure Skating, with more than 500 clubs registered in the U.S. today. Combining athleticism and artistry, synchronized skating, also known as “synchro,” involves a team of eight to 20 skaters, performing various complex and fast-moving elements in unison choreographed to music. Ahighly technical, as well as beautiful form of figure skating, synchro is characterized by speed, accuracy, complex formations and breathtaking transitions.
