Weare is right to file suit for representation

Representatives from Weare have made the right choice to join with a lawsuit that would force the state to form new districts for towns large enough to be their own.

State residents overwhelmingly approved changing the districts back in 2006 and nothing has been done yet. The lawsuit argues that if the law isn’t changed by early June, upcoming legislative elections won’t be constitutionally valid.

This is something that the state needs to resolve immediately. The House and Senate voted down proposals to change the districting even after the 2006 ballot vote.

Districting is often a partisan affair. However, as Republican Rep. Gary Hopper said, this is not about politics, this is about giving people in a small town equal representation.

He rightly notes that if he votes against a Goffstown issue, he could lose his seat, since Goffstown’s population is greater than Weare’s. This is not fair to residents of any town in the district.

Hopefully, the lawsuit forces the state to consider the will of its people and give them the proper representation they deserve in the Legislature.
