John Stark boys ski to second in Alpine race
WEARE – For the second year in a row
the John Stark Regional High School boys
Alpine ski team earned runners-up honors
at the NHIAA Division II Alpine Ski
Championship at Mount Sunapee.
Kennett won the 14-team meet in the
competitive division, which also includes
teams from Pembroke Academy, Hollis-
Brookline, Milford, Souhegan, Lebanon,
Hanover, Laconia, Plymouth, Kingswood,
Oyster River, Monadnock and Con-Val.
The team raced well all year, dropping
only two regular-season meets.
“We ski fast, we ski true and we ski for
fun,” said senior Andrew Fournier, who finished
33rd of 77 entrants in the giant slalom
race, then took 31st in the afternoon slalom.
Travis Nevins was the Generals’ strongest
skier, finishing sixth in the giant slalom and
fourth in the slalom to help the team reach
701 points. Austin Nevins, who finished
49th in the slalom and ninth in the giant
slalom; Kyle Anderson, who took seventh
in the slalom and 15th in the GS; Grady
Macklin, who was 21st in the slalom and
16th in the giant slalom; and Ross Macklin,
who crossed 58th in the slalom and 64th in
the GS, also participated for JS.
Anderson, Austin Nevins and Travis
Nevins were chosen to participate in New
Hampshire’s Meet of Champions at
Gunstock. The meet, organized by the
United States Ski and Snowboard
Association, brings together the top 12 racers
from each of the four divisions to compete.
The top 14 racers from this event will
move to a regional event against skiers from
Maine, Vermont, New York, Illinois, Ohio,
Virginia, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania.
Other members of the team, coached by
third-year mentor Matthew Colby, include
Alex Shreenan, Scott Townes, Robert
Stone, Gerald Cowan, Steve Kazakis,
Michael Doherty and Ben Zawacki. Josi
Hier and Ashley Morrison are the managers.
