About 20 residents gathered to witness the fastest School District Meeting in town history on Wednesday, Feb. 9.

It only took 30 minutes to discuss an article for the operating budget – the only article presented – which was then unanimously approved for the ballot by voters after a brief overview and without audience comment.

The proposed budget is $8,220,277, which is a 5.13 percent increase from last year’s school budget. A special education teacher, salary increases, rising health insurance costs and the purchase of textbooks make up a good portion of the increase. The default budget was calculated at $7,979,052.

SAU 19 Superintendent Darrell Lockwood also recognized School Board Chairman Diane Manson for her dedication to the board. Manson decided not to run again when her term was up this year, but said she may run again in the future. She’s been on the board since 1999.

“I love this school and this district, I really do,” Manson said. “I’m sure that given the individuals remaining on the board the new people coming into the district will be in good hands.”

Vice Chairman R. Fredrick Hayes is not running for reelection either, but did not attend the deliberative session. Lockwood said both would be missed much.
