John Stark boys schuss past competition

WEARE – January has been good to the John Stark Alpine skiers. Of course, the skiers have been pretty good, too.

First at Ragged Mountain in Danbury on Jan. 7, then again at Mt. Sunapee in Newport, and finally on the team’s home slope at Pats Peak on Jan. 13, the JS boys beat all competitors, improving to 26-0 following the home meet.

Two meets were held at Ragged Mountain, and three pairs of brothers moved Stark to the top of the mountain.

Erik Anderson, Kyle Anderson, Travis Nevins, AJ Nevins, Grady Macklin and Ross Macklin were all top-20 finishers. The Anderson boys each finished in the top six during both events.

This same group controlled half of the top 12 spots at Mt. Sunapee.

Then Travis Nevins, Eric Anderson, Grady Macklin and Kyle Anderson took spots one through four back home at Pats Peak.

The team is deep, too. Other skiers adding to the dominant Division II performance are Andrew Fournier, Alex Shreenan, Gerald Cowan, Steve Kazakis, Robert Stone, Scott Townes, Michael Doherty, Nathan Fonner and Ben Zawacki.

The girls enjoyed their first three victories of the year during the home meet Jan. 13, defeating Trinity, Souhegan and Milford while finishing in the middle of the pack in a seven-team meet.

The Generals’ Charlotte Brown won the event, posting the fastest time of the day in her first run. Samantha Ray joined her in the top 10. Meaghan Wells and Cara Bellerose also added to the Stark score. Caitlin Blouin completed both her trips down the mountain as well.

Brown also won the Jan. 11 race at Mt. Sunapee. Wells, Bellerose, Blouin, Kristina Brown and Ray also competed that day.
