NUMBER ONE Chris Grimes, center front, is the team captain for the West High Power Knights Team 501, which won the Granite State Regional FIRST championship on Saturday, March 6. He and his teammates were clearly happy with the win. (Ginger Kozlowski Photo)

ALL FOUR HANG  There are two teams with two robots each on the playing field, working as allies. In this match, all four robots managed to hang from the bar in a tangle of metal. (Paulette Gibbons Photo)

HANGING ON  One component of the game, worth 50 points, was to have the robot reach up to a bar and pull itself off the ground. West's robot hangs on the left.

TEAMWORK Torin Volk and Chris Grimes worked together to coordinate the robot's arm, which picks up balls, and its steering mechanisms. (Kelly Kozlowski Photo)

COORDINATION West High's robot, Hermes, hangs onto a large yellow ball that, when placed on top of a goal, doubles the value of the five-point purple balls in the goal. Here, in a qualifying round, West waits with the doubling ball after pushing the goal under a platform that drops the five point balls.
